CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
My footsteps are light and quiet as I move down the hallway outside my room, the magic wrapped around my soul telling me where I need to go.
Ignoring the fear that someone or something is watching me from the shadows, I carefully open the door, thanking the gods it glides open on silent hinges. Perhaps this will grant me some of their favor.
The room within is different from what I expected. It is sparse, as if the owner hardly spends any time in here besides a few hours sleeping. A sliver of sunlight breaks through the black curtains covering large windows, a breeze carrying the faint scent of the ocean fluttering the fabric. The high ceiling is painted as an exact replica of the starry sky, and a dark mist rises from the bed underneath where pale skin is peeking out from rumpled black sheets.
He looks peaceful asleep, so unlike the arrogant warrior and scheming prince Iâve come to know. He is lying as still as a statue, his lips slightly parted, his skin illuminated by the dim light. Some of the dark locks curl down to his forehead, and for a second, Iâm tempted to sweep it away with my fingers.
I grit my teeth and move my gaze away from his face. The lower half of his body is concealed underneath the sheets, and my breath catches in my throat when my eyes land on his bare chest.
The skin is a map of scars much like the one on my back, some lines faint and shallow, others ragged and deep. And then thereâs the myriad of marks etched into his skin, some of them perhaps his victory runes.
Dark, all of them. Just like the mark on my arm.
The prince might possess secrets I desperately need, but the need to win the Tournament is stronger.
Iâll do whatever it takes.
Iâm about to reach for my dagger when suddenly, at a speed that shouldnât be possible, Iâm pinned to the bed, the tip of my own dagger pressed against my throat. My heart leaps into my throat and I can do nothing but blink at him, willing myself not to glance at his very naked body.
Star leans down so close I can feel his breath on my face. âIf you wanted to be restrained in my bed, you only had to ask, starlight,â he purrs, pressing the tip of the dagger a little harder into my skin.
I snort, and the movement makes the dagger sink deeper into my skin, a drop of red running down my throat. âIn your dreams, moon boy.â Snatching the dagger from his hands, I roll over, flipping our position.
Star folds his hands under his head and looks up at me with an expectant look, amusement glimmering in his eyes. âSo tying me up would be more to your liking? I have no objections to that.â
I move the dagger to his throat. He is not taking me seriously, just like everyone else. The thought ignites an inferno of wrath inside me, my hands shaking with fury.
